Luvungi General Hospital (Mulimbalimba Hospital)

The Luvungi MHCD General Hospital (Mulimbalimba Hospital) is a general, community and proximity hospital located in the village of Luvungi, Territory of Uvira, Province of South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is a modern hospital of 150 beds, with 4 departments, namely: pediatrics, internal medicine for men and women, surgery, and obstetrics gynecology.

There are also other services such as the pharmacy, laboratory, blood bank, medical imaging and maternity ward.

At Luvungi General Hospital, there are departments (clinics) of dentistry, ophthalmology, naturopathy, the Mobile Clinic, a nutritional centre and the Epileptology Clinic.

This hospital was created by Doctor Luc MULIMBALIMBA MASURURU and his organization MHCD Mission in Health Care and Development.

After several years spent abroad, Luc Mulimbalimba, son and native of Luvungi, returned to his village to visit his brothers and sisters after more than 20 years of absence in Luvungi, Seeing the poor situation in which the people of Luvungi in Uvira Territory were living, Luc Mulimbalimba was forced to resign from his job abroad and move to his home village of Luvungi to start community development activities and poverty reduction projects.

Together with his wife Delice Mulimbalimba, they bought 6 hectares of land in Itara Luvungi, two kilometers from the centre of Luvungi.

Luc Mulimbalimba had the vision to develop his village through quick-impact development activities. He started the project to build a hospital and constructed the first building with 12 rooms. After constructing the first building, Luc Mulimbalimba received the first container of medical equipment from Australia.

Directly the Luvungi General Hospital was equipped and started to receive patients. With the help of the population of Luvungi in particular and of the Territory of Uvira in general, and with the support of MHCD Australian friends, Doctor Luc MULIMBALIMBA built other buildings and today Luvungi MHCD General Hospital has become a hospital of the Great Lakes countries because it receives not only patients from the DRC but also patients from neighboring Burundi and Rwanda.

It is one of the few hospitals in the Uvira Territory where goiter’s, cliff lips and pallet and many other complicated diseases are operated, the theatre also have modern medical equipment from Australia.

The Luvungi General Hospital also has a medical ambulance that transports patients from different villages of Uvira Territory free of charge.

It is the only medicalized ambulance in the Uvira territory, with a modern 2-bed operating theatre, the doctors of Luvungi MHCD General Hospital do more than 6 operations every day and all operations are semi-freely.

Doctor Luc MULIMBALIMBA has succeeded in revolutionizing the policy of health for all in the Territory of Uvira. Thanks to his policy of health for all, other hospitals and health centres have lowered their prices for fear of not having patients, which is why the population of the Territory of Uvira thanks Dr. Luc Mulimbalimba and his wife Délice Mulimbalimba for having initiated the policy of health development in their Territory.

About MHCD

MHCD was founded out of Dr Luc’s compassion for the people of Kenya and in his home town of Luvungi in Eastern D.R. Congo.  After working in Kenya and coming back to Luvungi in 2006 he was so touched by the plight of the desperately poor and disadvantaged people, particularly women and children that he immediately committed to helping them by providing medical assistance.
